Back to school! (Week 8 Student Teaching)

Last week was spring break and it was nice to have some time off. With that being said, I'm not sure which is worse the week before spring break or the week after.

This week was all about getting back to work and it was quite a hectic week in the classroom!

Monday was an adjustment day so we weren't too hard on the kids. In first period, we finished watching the last 15 minutes of the movie "The Biggest Little Farm". After the movie was done we had a discussion about the movie. It was interesting to see what the kids thought about the movie. Many didn't agree with some of the methods being used (which was exactly what I was hoping for) but a lot of them were able to see the purpose behind what they were trying to accomplish (which is a win for me).

In second period we started talking about Temple Grandin and watched some of the Temple Grandin Movie. This class seemed very fascinated by here and I loved how interested in her work they were.

In fourth period (our ag mech e-learning class), we introduced a project on career in welding. Their task is to find a career in welding and research it. I am looking forward to see what they came up with.

Tuesday was an outside work day! It is that time of year again. Spring has sprung and it is time to start preparing for the Durant FFA Plant Sale. A lot of work comes with preparing for this so we like to get the kids involved.

We keep the potted plants on the grounds on top of some covering which is great except the one downfall is WEEDS. So it was about time to fix that problem.

We had first period pull all the plants off of the covering and pull some of the bigger weeds that were hiding under the plants. Then we had the rest of the class periods pull all the weeds from inside the pots along with the ones growing out of the bottom.

While we were pulling weeds, we had one of the seniors blow all the debris off the cover with a leaf blower so we could get a better look at what maintenance needed to be done. Then during 7th period we sprayed some roundup to knock out some of the bigger weeds in and surrounding the nursery.

Wednesday I was back at the UF plant city campus for the internship seminar. This time we talked about job interviewing skills. It was a great time and I learned A LOT.

Thursday was observation day! First period was working on their plant business posters. They were given this assignment a while back but haven't been able to work on it due to COVID and Strawberry Festival. Each group was given a scenario where a plant business is failing and their job is to figure out what changes need to be made to improve the business. My first period class is pretty rowdy but they still got their work done so I was pleased.

Second period got to go outside. We needed to move all the plants back and we noticed some plants that needed to be replanted. I worked with a group of 3 students to repot plants while Mr. Sturgis led the rest of the class in moving plants.

Saturday was an exciting day because it was the FFA Sweetheart pageant. It was all hands on deck to make sure everything ran smoothly so I helped out backstage. It was really fun and I enjoyed watching the girls compete.

Overall it was a packed week but a fun week!
