The Start of the Festival! (Week 6 Student Teaching)

Oh it's the most exciting time of the year!

There is only one Florida Strawberry Festival and being able to be apart of the festival was something I was very exciting for.

There is a lot of prep that goes into Strawberry Festival so most of our focus in and out of class this week was all about Strawberry festival.

The first task on our very long to-do list was to shave sheep and make them look nice and pretty for the show. Before this moment, I had only worked with sheep for a total of like 30 seconds so I had a lot to learn but man oh man was I excited. Days like these are my absolute favorite because the kids get to learn by getting dirty and working hard.

We started off by working on two sheep. So Monday, we got almost every class period involved in the process of shaving sheep. By the end of the day we had two of the sheep completely done and man oh man was that satisfying. I mean what a transformation.

After school on Monday we worked with our OH Demonstration CDE team to see how they were progressing. It was exciting to hear about what they were planning to do to make their video presentation stand out.

On Tuesday, we shaved two more sheep and got as many kids involved in the process throughout the day as possible.

Wednesday was the day I had been waiting for! It was our first day at the festival. When we arrived at the festival we headed to the front office to pick up all our materials and tickets. After we got everything organized, we loaded up the truck and headed down to where the poultry show was going to take place. Sturgis and I were in charge of checking in all the chickens, breaking up any chicken fights and moving chickens around if needed. It was fun to see all the kids projects and I really enjoyed seeing how proud they were of their chickens!

Thursday was quite a long day! We spent the whole day at school but after school is when things got really exciting. We headed back to the festival grounds and prepared for a busy night. This time Sturgis and I were working the boards for the Pig Show. I was very much looking forward to this because I really enjoy working with pigs. So we spent the whole night chasing pigs around the ring with big red boards. Some listened, some didn't but we sure did have a lot of fun!

Friday was another long day. We spent all day at school and then headed straight to the festival grounds. Our job this time was a little different. This time we worked the pig sale (a new experience for me!). The pig sale at the festival is an auction style sale. Each exhibitor and their pig enters the ring and then the audience bids on the pig (per a pound). So our main job was to keep the pig moving and keep the pig towards the center of the ring so that the camera could get a good view of the pig.

By the end of the week I was exhausted but I learned so much and had so much fun!
