The End of a Journey (Week 12 of Student teaching)

Image
I can't believe that student teaching is already over. It feels like my first day was just last week. My student teaching experience was quite the roller coaster ride. From behavior problems, to having almost my whole class quarantined, to having a false positive COVID test it was quite a wild ride.  I think the biggest thing I've learned from this experience is to trust myself. Trust in my abilities and my knowledge but don't be afraid to admit when you are wrong. Oh and always always always keep learning because you will never know everything.  It didn't really hit me until about 2:00 on Friday that this experience was coming to an end. All of us have been preparing for student teaching since Freshman year and now its magically over. In a little over a week I will be graduating with two degrees and I just can't believe I did it. I accomplished both degrees oh and student taught in a pandemic...  Student teaching in a pandemic is a wild experience that comes with...

Science Classroom Visit!

Image
During the last week of student teaching, I had the wonderful opportunity to observe a science classroom during 3rd period. Here is what I observed from my visit! Class: Astronomy  Lesson Title: The Big Bang! Date: 4/19/2021 1) What were the objectives of the lesson? "Students will be able to explain the evidence that supports the big bang. 2) In your opinion, were the students interested in the lesson? Why or why not? Yes! They were 100% interested in learning about the big bang because the teacher had them fully engaged in the material the whole time through the use of open discussion embedded in the lecture.  3) What teaching methods or behaviors were most affective in achieving the objectives? Guided notes + Worksheet, discussion, and powerpoint 4) In your opinion, was the teacher "giving away" information or facilitating learning? In my opinion the teacher facilitated learning. They asked questions and allowed students to answer. The teacher also did not just give...

The Final observation :( (Week 11 of student teaching)

Image
The week started off strong with my final observation (the one that counts). I had prepped and prepped for this but things really didn't go to plan.  Unfortunately, I had a lot of behavior problems with my students that took away from the lesson.  However it was an exciting day for my first period because we were finally starting poster presentation! Everyone was back from quarantine and I had a full class. Unfortunately these did not go great. I should have made the expectations much higher because they didn't take the presentation part as serious as I would of liked them to.  Second period went a little bit better but still not the best. My interest approach took too long because the kids were seated too far apart to pass bags to each other. I think this activity will work better in non-covid times.  Fourth period has really become my favorite class and things went pretty well in this class. We finished Common shop tools and it was time to start prepping for ...

A new kind of roadblock (Week 10 of Student teaching)

Image
When I say this week did not go as planned I really mean this week did. not go as planned... However the week started off like a normal week. On Monday, I gave the students time to work on their posters. During second period, we worked on getting the plant sale signs ready.  In fourth period, I started something new! I started working on Common shop tools with them. I was kind of hesitant on how this was going to go because tools can be quite boring but it actually went quite well.  Tuesday is when things started to not go as planned. I originally planned on going to districts with Mr. Sturgis and our students but we were informed that only one advisor was approved to attend. So I used the time to take the last Praxis I needed to graduate. After taking the test, I got my second dose of the COVID vaccine.  I was hoping not to have a reaction to the shot but unfortunately that wasn't possible. In fact, I actually had a quite severe reaction. I had a fever Wednesday an...

A Shortened week and April Fools.... (Week 9 Student Teaching)

Image
Although this week was a shortened week but it actually felt quite long.  On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to spend the day with an Ag teacher at Lennard High School. The program at Lennard was quite different at Durant so it was the perfect place for me to spend the day. I observed Mrs. Kayla Marsh. She teaches primarily Veterinary Assisting (a certification class) which is the ag class I took in high school. Mrs. Marsh's first period class was a special education class which I enjoyed seeing. She was so good with the students and really kept them engaged in the material.  At the end of the day I got to observe the beginning of their FFA meeting which was great because Durant isn't allowed to have FFA meeting due to covid restrictions. I couldn't stay for the whole meeting because I had to head back to the plant city area for the Hillsborough County Fair pig drawing. This event decides who is and isn't showing a pig that year at the county fair. They have to do this ...
